I need help repotting my orchids?

i just bought two moth orchids. i noticed the pot they came in is kinda small and the roots seem to be crammed and it came with a lot of moss in it. normally i would repot a flower if it needs a bigger pot but being that orchids are more delicate i need to know if i even need to repot them.. both of them are blooming and have buds. my question is when, and if, i should repot the orchids.

thanks ;)|||Orchids are what are known as epiphytic plants. This means they live on a host (a tree) and do not root in any soil. They grow in crevices between branches where water, leaves and moss accumulate. This is all they need to survive. They are sold in pots with not much more than bark chip in for this reason and this is also why they are very rootbound. If you pot them up nicely and look after them you will be very unlikely to get any flowers, just soft, lush, green growth as they will feel there is no need to reproduce as they are under no threat of imminent death! Growers often have orchids crawling along benches with roots dangling down all over the place. Orchids naturally creep along a branch rooting wherever is possible as they go.

Pot them up once they finish flowering into bark chip (not woodchip) or buy an orchid compost. Pot up just slightly bigger than they are now and water with rainwater whenever possible. If you can find some moss to top the pot all the better but they will live without. It is just used to immitate their natural growing conditions as much as possible. For the same reason do not position in full sunlight.

Read up on what exactly moth orchids require as far as cutting or not cutting the flower stem off totally and whether they need a period of cold chill to make them flower again next year. Some orchids do some don%26#039;t.

Hope that is helpful:)|||Enjoy the bloom while it lasts.

Remember to keep medium moist.

When blooms have faded, cut off spike and repot.
